ReplyDeleteAll right, here's my attempt at translating the text:
ReplyDeleteA young person seeks teachings from a Chan (Zen) Master. The young person asks, "Master, some people who praise me, tell me that I am a genius and will have a very successful future. However, some people who scold me, tell me that I am an idiot and that I won't have a bright future. What do you see me as?"
The master replies, "How do you see yourself?"
The person looks blank and shakes his head.
The master continues, "If there is a catty of rice, different people will view it differently. In the eyes of a housewife, it can only be cooked into 2 or 3 bowls of rice. In the eyes of a farmer, that catty of rice will be only worth 1 yuan at most. In the eyes of a rice dumpling seller, after making it into a rice dumpling, it can be sold for 3 yuan. In the eyes of a cookie maker, after being processed and being made into a cookie, it can be sold for 5 yuan. In the eyes of a seasoning maker, after processing the rice into seasonings, it can be sold for 8 yuan. In the eyes of a rice wine maker, it can be made into wine and be sold for 40 yuan. However, no matter who views it, the rice is still the same catty of rice."
He further continues, "No matter how much people try to raise or lower your value, you are still you. How successful your future will be, actually lies on how you actually view yourself."
The young person finally understands the master and becomes cheerful.
